Outdoor Plumbing That Can Wash Out Summer Plans

With warm weather finally returning, it is time to start making plans for backyard barbecues and other outdoor activities. But that can be difficult if the outdoor plumbing system is experiencing some issues from last winter. Though no one wants to be thinking about broken sprinkler systems or hose bibs, preparing for the worst can save time and money in the long run.

Sprinkler System Issuessprinkler

A broken sprinkler system can be one of the worst things for the backyard. These problems are usually the result of pressure from saturated soil around the system, but not always.

A sprinkler system can break because it gets old and worn, or a lawnmower or ATV can run over it. Usually, homeowners can identify breaks if at least two of the sprinkler heads are not working. However, the first sign of a problem with the sprinkler system is the lack of water in outdoor areas.

Old Hose Bibshose

A hose bib is the small faucet attachment on an outer wall of a home that provides water to the backyard. The hose bib connects directly to the plumbing system in the home. Hose bibs are very susceptible to cold weather, and when they freeze, they can cause cracks or leaks in the pipes. This happens when the hose is left attached in the winter or is not drained when temperatures reach freezing.

Sometimes the hose bib will even burst and flood the basement of the home or the yard. One can avoid this by ensuring that the outdoor faucet does not have access to the water in the home. There are also frost-free hose bibs that will not freeze as easily, and an attachment called a vacuum breaker helps prevent backflow.

Signs of Sewer Line Issues

Sewer line damage can be expensive because often, the early stages are not noticeable. Hidden leaks first run up the water bill and will cause major property damage if left unattended. Even though these easily fly under the radar, there are signs that the sewer line needs attention.

  • Odor: Obviously, a sewer line will smell bad. But if there is a new, strange odor, it could be a sign of a cracked pipe. Sewer gas can also be toxic if it gets into the home.
  • Slow drains: Usually, slow drainage indicates a blockage in the pipes. But if there are multiple slow drains in the home, it could be a sign the sewer line has separated or tree roots have obstructed them.
  • Soggy or lush lawn: An unnaturally lush or soggy lawn means the sewer line is probably leaking. Sewers house good fertilizer that will help the grass grow around the area, but eventually, it can cause a sinkhole to form around the break and attract insects and rodents.

If the sewage system seems to be having any of these issues, call a professional immediately. They can determine the break's location and whether it can be repaired or will need to be replaced.
