Does Low Shower Water Pressure Have An Easy Fix?

Low water pressure in the shower may seem like a minor inconvenience, but it can indicate a larger problem within a home’s plumbing system. It is always a symptom, not a happening in and of itself. A sudden decrease in water pressure can mean several things, including a major leak. Water pressure decreasing over time can also happen, usually resulting from some sort of scale or sediment buildup. The next few paragraphs will explore the reasons behind low water pressure and what homeowners can do about it.

Reason #1: Water Heater Problems

If the water heater has a scale buildup or a leak, then it may be causing low water pressure. This means a homeowner should get a professional inspection to determine the root of the problem. It may be that the water heater merely needs to be flushed, but there may be a larger issue. It is best to allow this to be determined by a pro.

Reason #2: Issues With Pipes

It may seem obvious that water pressure problems can come from plumbing leaks, but what sort of pipe problems cause leaks? Several issues can result in leaky pipes. The age of the pipes is certainly a significant factor. A few of the other factors that may come up are in the list below.

  • Corrosion: As pipes wear down and are sometimes exposed to corrosive chemicals, they can corrode to the point that they leak. Usually, this means the pipe will have to be replaced.
  • Cracks: If a pipe has a crack due to physical damage or a surge in water pressure, it can affect water pressure. Sometimes plumbing professionals can seal these cracks without replacing the whole pipe.
  • Hard Water Scale: If a home has hard water, the pipes may be lined with calcium and magnesium deposits. This can affect water pressure, and the supply lines may need to be flushed.

A plumbing technician can address all of these issues. The last area of concern is the showerhead

Reason #3: The Showerhead Itself

showerHard water scale not only builds up in pipes, but it can also block fixtures such as aerators on faucets, kitchen sprayer attachments, and shower heads. This can be remedied by removing the shower head or other fixture and allowing it to soak in a cleaner that dissolves calcium salts. This will allow the water to flow freely again. Some other issues that can result in low water pressure are listed below.

  • Partially closed shut-off valve
  • Worn mixing valve
  • Kinked hose
  • Failed water pressure regulator

Again, these problems can be handled by a plumbing professional and may be a very quick procedure.
